Custom Cryogenic Sample Manipulator for Synchrotron Research

OmniVac is currently developing a bespoke sample manipulator designed for operation at cryogenic temperatures down to 10 K — built to meet the exacting demands of synchrotron beamline environments.

The system is being developed in close collaboration with research teams at two of Europe’s leading light source facilities: Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste in Italy and MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. Both facilities operate cutting-edge beamlines for surface science and materials characterization, where precise, vibration-stable sample positioning at ultra-low temperatures is a hard requirement.

Key design parameters include:

  • Operating temperature range down to 10 K (liquid helium cooling circuit)
  • XYZ positioning with sub-micron reproducibility
  • UHV compatibility (base pressure < 1 × 10⁻¹⁰ mbar)
  • Minimal thermal drift over extended measurement periods
  • Rotational degrees of freedom for angular-resolved measurements (ARPES / XPS workflows)
  • Compact footprint for integration into existing beamline geometry

The manipulator draws on OmniVac’s experience in ultra-high vacuum systems and surface-analysis instrumentation. Every component — from the cryostat interface to the motion feedthroughs — is engineered in-house and specified for long-term reliability under continuous beamline operation.

This project reflects a growing area of OmniVac’s work: partnering directly with research institutions to develop application-specific vacuum hardware where off-the-shelf solutions fall short.

Delivery and commissioning are scheduled in coordination with the respective facility teams.
